Class enrollments will not be processed until May 15. We will not process requests that are sent without the class enrollment sheet or the deposit.
LEVELS: All high school academic subjects have a specific level, or can accommodate multiple levels. The key to the level is as follows:
Level 1- Remedial Courses
Level 1 is for students who struggle in a subject. While it is acceptable for high school graduation, Remedial Courses are not acceptable for college applicants.
Level 2- Average High School Courses
Level 2 is for average high school students. While Level 2 Courses are not as rigorous as Level 3- College Prep courses, taking a Level 2 course does not prevent a student from going to college.
Level 3- College Preparatory Courses
Level 3 is for students who are certain they are going to college. These courses mimic the rigor of college classes.
Level 4- Advanced Courses
Level 4 is for students in College Prep courses who are able to do more rigorous work. These courses add power to the transcript and are attractive to colleges. Level 4 at Mt. Sophia requires Level 3 work plus 1/2 more credit to equal 1 advanced credit.
Level 5- Honors Courses
Level 5 is for highly competitive students who want the most powerful transcripts. These courses look very attractive to colleges but are very rigorous. Level 5 at Mt. Sophia requires fully double the work of a Level 3 course.
* Courses marked by an asterisk are considered core classes and therefore fulfill the DIAA requirement.

World Literature * (fulfills DIAA requirements if accompanied by the writing cluster)
Teacher: Sabrina Justison
Level: High School level 3, 4, + mature 8th graders who are strong readers
Thursday, 9:30-10:25
Cost: $70 deposit + $250 class fee
Credit: 1 credit if accompanied by Writing Cluster classes. ½ credit if not accompanied by Writing Cluster classes or writing on your own.
Prerequisite: None
Text: The list that follows is a tentative book list; please do not purchase books on this list yet. The book list will be finalized by mid-summer and confirmed via email to students who have registered for the class. You should plan to purchase the books or borrow them privately; relying on the library’s availability at the time we are reading the book for class is risky at best, and we strongly discourage this approach!
The Book List is not COMPLETELY FIRM yet, but will probably include most of the following:
Genesis
Epic of Gilgamesh
Antigone by Sophocles
The Aeneid by Virgil
Plato’s Republic Bks. I & II
Les Miserables (abridged Ballantine/Fawcett) by Victor Hugo
Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Good Earth by Pearl Buck
Kafka’s Metamorphosis
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery
The Count of Monte Cristo (abridged Dover ed.) by Alexandre Dumas
Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales and Stories (asst’d. – online)
Teaching format: lecture with note-taking, class discussion groups, quizzes, and cumulative tests. Class participation will be a core piece of the student’s grade. Each book will be read independently by the student, and there will be an accompanying study guide to fill out as the reading is done.
Time expectation: Because this is a core academic subject, students should expect to spend a significant amount of time on the work. Books will be read independently with an accompanying study guide to fill out as the reading is done. The amount of time required will be heavily dependent on the reading speed of the student. We will be reading 150 pages or so per week (weeks when the number of pages is less, it will be because the material is more difficult to comprehend). I would guess 8 hours per week for reading and answering the study guide questions.
Description: Good literature has come forth since time began, and it comes from all over the world. We get to read lots of it and discuss it together – what fun!
Note: Writing assignments are NOT included in this class. In order for this class to fulfill Mt. Sophia’s English requirement students must also take the Writing Cluster class or complete writing assignments on their own.
You may need to read additional books to fulfill the requirements for your contracted level.

High School Old Testament Survey
Teacher: Christine Metzing
Level: High School
Monday, 10:45-11:40
Cost: deposit $70 + $250 class fee
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: none
Text/Materials required: Students will need a “word for word” Bible translation (i.e. King James, New King James, New American Standard). We will be learning how to use a concordance. They will also need access to a concordance that corresponds to their translation (many available on Amazon for about $14).
Time expectation: 3-4 hours/ weekly
Description: Investigate “His-story” in the Old Testament and survey how Christ was revealed through the books of the Old Testament. While going through much of the history, major stories, and themes of each book, we will also explore the major prophecies, the pictures of Christ in the Old Testament, the family line of Jesus, and many of the OT passages referenced in the New Testament. I will be using a fill-in-the-blank technique so they will be asked to look up all the answers in their Bibles or concordances. I tend to use NASB version so it is a bit easier if they have that version but students can function with any word for word version.
High School New Testament Survey
Teacher: Christine Metzing
Level: High School
Monday, 12:30-1:25
Cost: deposit $70 + $250 class fee
Credit: 1

Time expectation: 2 hours weekly
Description: We’ll discuss the New Testament by going through “His-story” in the Gospels and early church history from Acts. Throughout this section, we will reflect back on fulfillments of Old Testament prophesies. Then we’ll proceed with a survey of the Letters and end with the prophetic book of Revelation. We will tend to stay with direct reading of the Bible and use a style that involves filling in short answers from the passages they read. I tend to use NASB version so it is a bit easier if they have that version, but students can function with any word for word version.
How to Reason from and Study the Scriptures – Biblical Exegesis
Teacher: Christine Metzing
Level: level 2
Monday, 1:30-2:25
Cost: deposit $70 + $250 class fee
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: none
Time expectation: Light. About one Bible chapter reading per week
The goal of this class will be to teach the students to intelligently discuss scripture. The homework for this class will be light (about one chapter per week as the reading assignment). Several of Paul’s shorter epistles will be discussed in depth over the course of the school year. Each student will be met where they are. For some it may mean increasing understanding of the scriptures, and for others it may mean becoming equipped to lead a small group Bible study (such as in a dorm). The students will be taught how to reason from the scriptures. The importance of backing up scripture with scripture, understanding the context of the passage, and seeing scripture in light of the whole counsel of God’s word will be taught. We will be stressing the importance of leaning on the Lord and asking the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we go through God’s word both individually and as a group. Knowing that there will be disagreements, we will stress the importance of respectful disagreement while continuing to walk in love.

Materials will be available for purchase through the Instructor.
Teaching format: lecture, in-class practice, homework
Time expectation: 1-2 hours weekly
Description: A solid SAT score can give homeschooled students the added boost they need to get into the college of their choice!! Students of all grade levels will benefit from the strategies and test-taking principles taught in this course. Although most students don’t take the SAT until Junior Year, starting preparation early helps solidify their test-taking skills in addition to helping students see the “big picture” as they study for their other required classes. As one mother of a current student stated, “The SAT prep class has been a wonderful experience for my freshman daughter. She is learning early what she needs to concentrate on to be successful on the SAT, without the pressure of performing. An added benefit is that she is seeing the relevance of her current classes to her long-term goals. “
All concepts tested on the SAT & PSAT will be reviewed and practiced, both in class and at home. Students will learn strategies for handling all question types, including both verbal and math. Students will also learn how to write a timed essay and will be given opportunities to practice this skill throughout the year (Added bonus: students can earn dual credit by counting these essays towards their English writing requirements!). Because the 4 ½ hour SAT requires “endurance” in addition to knowledge, students will have the opportunity to take 4 full-length practice tests both at home or in a classroom setting (date/time to be announced). For each test, students will receive a detailed report of their results. Bu understanding their strengths and weaknesses, students can more effectively target their preparation to their weakest areas.
