Penny Mears has been a teacher with Mt. Sophia since it opened in 1996. She received a B.A. Degree from Lee University in 1981. She began homeschooling her oldest in 1986. All four of her sons graduated from Mt. Sophia, with the oldest being part of the first Mt. Sophia graduation class in 1998. Her youngest graduated in 2014. Two of her sons married homeschoolers from other states. Penny has 4 grandchildren with another one on the way.
While homeschooling her sons, Penny was part of a coop and taught several subjects including civics and history. She became a teacher at Mt. Sophia when they started holding regular classes on Monday and Thursday in 2010. She has been teaching social studies and history classes since then including, American history, World History, Civics, Economics, and Geography.
She led the church music team while her husband pastored for 30 years. When he retired from pastoring, she retired from the music team. Currently, she teaches piano lessons four nights a week at S Music Studio in Middletown, Delaware.
